Takemichi Hanagaki (Takumi Kitamura, TREMBLE ALL YOU WANT) lives a peaceful life with his beloved Hinata (Mio Imada, AS LONG AS WE BOTH SHALL LIVE, also at Fantasia 2023), thanks to the heroic deeds he performed when he returned to the past and stabilized the present. Or so he thinks. She dies before his very eyes in a horrific accident that looks like an assassination attempt. To his dismay, the people responsible are members of the Tokyo Manji Gang, as part of which he fought to save Hinata the first time. A past event has split his pals and pushed them towards brutal, merciless criminality. He must go back in time to prevent this event from having unimaginable consequences. This time, Takemichi will have to do much more to save not only the woman he loves, but also all his friends, who are in a downward spiral from which there might be no return.
In bringing to the screen the excellent Bloody Halloween story arc from Ken Wakui's revered manga series, filmmaker Tsutomu Hanabusa (PROJECT DREAMS: HOW TO BUILD MAZINGER Z'S HANGAR, Audience Award winner at Fantasia 2020), has made the wise choice of splitting the story into two films. While TOKYO REVENGERS, a must-see special screening this year, is now considered by many fans to be a near-perfect adaptation, this sequel doesn't disappoint. Takemichi is given remarkable depth, as are all the old characters and the major new players in the story, the whole bunch of them immediately engaging. The mind-blowing fight sequences, the dedicated and enthusiastic performances, and Hanabusa's flawless direction do justice to the original material, and then some, but the stakes are doubled and the risks taken by the protagonist are heightened. And this intense experience is only the prelude to the explosive second part, which could relegate the expression “action-packed” to the rank of tepid understatement. – Translation: Rupert Bottenberg
