A teenager’s angsty, wistful inner monologue, taken from the writings of Japanese literary icon Osamu Dazai, accompanies a flow of often surreal, distinctly Japanese imagery in this early short film from director Shigeyoshi Tsukahara. It establishes the animator’s particular proclivities and preoccupations — watercolour tones and textures, the mixing of techniques drawn from old-fashioned forms of entertainment, and a powerful sense of nostalgia. – Rupert Bottenberg
