“A love letter to one of the grandfathers of tokusatsu TV shows... perfectly threads the needle between retro and modern”
– Richard Eisenbeis, ANIME NEWS NETWORK College student and motorcycle enthusiast Takeshi Hongo was kidnapped by an evil organization called SHOCKER, bent on world domination using an army of transformed mutant cyborgs, artificial hybrids of human, insect, and machine. Takeshi is a prime subject, being a great athlete and very intelligent — but just before being brainwashed into a killing machine, he’s rescued by Dr. Midorikawa, a Shocker scientist with a guilty conscience. Takeshi now has superhuman powers, but has retained his human soul. He teams up with Midorikawa’s daughter, and together they embark on a rampage of destruction to stop the Shocker invasion. No longer quite human, Takeshi is cursed to fight and fight again for justice, perhaps forever...
The superhero franchise
KAMEN RIDER (“masked rider”) is an enormously popular Japanese tokusatsu series. If Ultraman is often considered the Superman of Japanese heroes, Kamen Rider represents the darker edge of justice, like Batman. First created as a manga by Shotaro Ishinomori,
KAMEN RIDER kicked his way onto TV screens in 1971, and since then has evolved through endless incarnations across 34 TV series as well as multiple feature films. Hideaki Anno, who gained fame with his outstanding anime series
NEON GENESIS EVANGELION, is a hardcore fan of the canonical tokusatsu genre. In 2016, he shocked the world with his re-invention of the King of Monsters,
SHIN GODZILLA. That success led him to write
SHIN ULTRAMAN (Fantasia 2022), directed by his friend Shinji Higuchi. The latest in his
SHIN series of re-envisioned tokusatsu icons is
SHIN KAMEN RIDER. Based on the original, much darker and more violent version in the manga, Anno’s film nonetheless digs deep into the tropes and stylings of vintage TV shows of this genre, resonating with genuine love and appreciation. Kickstart your motorcycles, rev the engines, put your power helmets on, and race over to Fantasia for this amazing cinematic event! –
