A confectioner is offered a sweet deal by a strange late-night customer. Hungry for her next feast, a ghostly woman invades a young man’s apartment. A backpacking couple stumble upon an isolated village whose inhabitants claim is the birthplace of many eerie superstitions. In a coastal city plagued by a string of children’s disappearances, a grieving man investigates rumours of a mysterious force known as “the Call of the Night”. Written and directed by Nuhash Humayun, these creepy stories compose PETT KATA SHAW, an anthology inspired by age-old oral legends from Bangladesh. Petni, djinns, nishi… Bengali folklore is ripe with ghosts and unforgiving spirits, all deeply connected to its people’s collective history of injustice and societal dread. Reinvented in a contemporary setting, these bedtime spine-chillers don’t shy away from today’s most essential issues, such as mental health, religion, climate change, and gender roles.
Remember his name, because you’ll be hearing it again: the breakout star of Bangladeshi horror cinema, Nuhash Humayun has an undeniable knack for deep yet concise storytelling. Winner of the Midnight Shorts Competition at SXSW as well as a Gold Audience Award at Fantasia 2022, his short film MOSHARI recently earned him international acclaim as the first Bangladeshi production ever to qualify for an Academy Award, catching the attention of Jordan Peele and Riz Ahmed, who later came on board as executive producers. With PETT KATA SHAW, Humayun delivers not one but four beautifully crafted shorts, immortalizing these immemorial folk tales through a fresh lens while still capturing their authentic, distinctly South-Asian essence. And if you still can't get enough of his work, don't miss FOREIGNERS ONLY as part of our Things That Go Bump in the East 2023 showcase! – Alyssia Duval-Nguon
