The daily life of humble tailor Ebraam is a rather routine affair until the day he receives a package containing a remarkable family heirloom. Two jars of buttons are in the box — one batch will bring good fortune, the other bad luck, to those on whose clothing they are sewn. He has inherited a formidable responsibility, to act as an agent of justice. To do so correctly, he must do as his forefathers did, and follow the guidance of a beloved pet. In Ebraam’s case, that’s his mischievous cat, Homeira. With swatches of Iranian neo-realism, fantastical fable, and philosophical comedy, filmmakers Mohsen Asdaghpour and Amirhossein Talebi have sewn together a perfectly charming tale boasting a clever and thoughtful script, a subtly charismatic performance from lead actor Siavash Cheraghi Pour, impeccable art direction recalling Wes Anderson and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and of course a cat of uncanny consequence. – Rupert Bottenberg
