Sometimes, Fran (Daisy Ridley, STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS) thinks about dying. Spontaneously, preparedly, poetically, at the mercy of a snake or alone in the woods... Anything to save her from the drudgery of daily life. An office drone in a sleepy coastal town, she goes about her days completely isolated from her coworkers, unable or unwilling to engage with their social rituals. A new hire, Dave (David Merheje), soon starts at the company. Funny and gregarious, he disrupts the established dynamic and befriends Fran. Suddenly, Fran glimpses something outside of her hardened shell.
An update on Stefanie Abel Horowitz’s darkly humorous short of the same name (showcased in BORN OF WOMAN, Fantasia 2019), Rachel Lambert’s SOMETIMES I THINK ABOUT DYING is an immensely moving, refreshingly direct film about depression and social anxiety. An impeccably directed tale of everyday yearning, it gives body to a specific kind of sadness: a pervasive loneliness that hinders, isolates, and quietly ravages. This is further explored by Lambert’s uncanny ability to capture the tedium of routine and corporate gestures; the ebb and flow of small-town normalcy; that most ineffable of feelings that the horizon of possibilities is disappearing before one’s very eyes.
