As society apprehensively prepares for the dreaded Y2K bug, Young-mi lives an unremarkable life as a bookkeeper for a tech factory, where her awkward disposition and dowdy appearance have earned her the nickname “Ms. Apocalypse.” Secretly infatuated with a delivery driver named Do-young, who has always treated her with kindness, she is shocked when she finds out that he has been embezzling company money, but ultimately chooses to cover his tracks. Filled with a sudden desire to repent, with the turn of the millennium just a day away, Do-young eventually decides to turn himself in, and they are both sentenced to jail. A few months later, Young-mi is finally released, only to find an unexpected face waiting for her on the way out: Do-young’s wife, Yu-jin. She is beautiful, elegant, but afflicted with a condition that has left her paralyzed from the neck down. She is also quite belligerent, and has a compelling offer for Young-mi.
Written and directed by Lim Sun-ae, whose feature debut AN OLD LADY (2019) earned her critical acclaim in South Korea and beyond, MS. APOCALYPSE is a bittersweet and profoundly human story of unrequited love. “I want to shine a light on the people that society doesn’t pay attention to — and convey my hope that they live a dignified life instead of hiding in the shadows,” the filmmaker expressed in a magazine interview during the film’s production. And that is precisely what she accomplishes with the help of her talented cast (which includes Lee Yoo-young, Roh Jae-won, and Lim Sun-woo) and its seemingly effortless portrayal of the flawed yet extremely touching characters she penned into existence. Painted in soft, colourful sequences, MS. APOCALYPSE is an ode to courage and new beginnings that shows how even our darkest days aren’t the end of the world. – Alyssia Duval-Nguon
